Assumption College (AC) is an all-girls school in the heart of the financial capital of the country. While the Makati campus has been around since 1958, its beginnings can be traced back to the late 1800s when the Religious of the Assumption came to the Philippines and established a Teachers Training School in Manila. Today, AC seeks to give the education to empower women to take action in different fields of expertise and industries.

AC offers Basic to Graduate education. The Senior High School offers Accounting, Business & Management (ABM), Arts & Design (A&D), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Biography

Mariana Abarca is an insect ecologist studying plant-insect interactions from a global change perspective. Insects are one of the most diverse groups of living organisms both in terms of species richness and ecological function. Anthropogenic threats, such as habitat loss and degradation, climate change, pollution, pesticide use and altered plant communities have triggered severe insect population declines characterized not just by extinction of some species, but also by lowering abundance of common species. Research in the Abarca lab combines natural history observations, experimental manipulations both in the field and the laboratory, and implementation of ecological modeling techniques to study how herbivorous insects respond to seasonal alterations, thermal stress and changes in the community composition of their host plants and natural enemies.

Current research topics include:

Assessing the effects of thermal stress and novel host plants on the performance and seasonality of moths and butterflies.

Evaluating the evolutionary and ecological trade-offs that affect herbivore diet breadth (in collaboration with Dr. Gina Wimp, Georgetown University, Dr. Mayra Vidal, University of Massachusetts Boston, Dr. Shannon Murphy and Dhaval Vyas, University of Denver).

Monitoring of insect populations and the ecosystem services they provide in pollinator gardens and across urbanization gradients.

Ada Comstock Scholars Program

The Ada Comstock Scholars Program enables women of nontraditional college age to complete a bachelor of arts degree either part-time or full-time, with flexible options for course loads, special academic advising, career counseling and housing. Ada Comstock Scholars have come to Smith from all parts of the United States and as far as Asia and Africa. Ada students attend the same classes and fulfill the same requirements as all other Smith undergraduates.

Architecture & Urbanism

Students may take studio courses in many media, from sculpture and drawing to video, photography and printmaking. We also offer interdisciplinary courses organized around conceptual questions and themes. Classes take place in studios with spaces for hand-setting type, using bandsaws, creating installations and designing computer graphics. All senior art majors have their own studio spaces.

In the Studio

Studio art at Smith gives students hands-on opportunities to delve into six exciting areas of concentration.

All graduating Art majors and minors will:

develop familiarity with original works of art and/or architecture and with research tools appropriate for the discipline, including print scholarship, online databases, and various reference materials; 

communicate their ideas effectively in written, oral and (as appropriate) material form, including public presentations that rely upon the display of visual images or artwork;

engage a range of disciplines in their work, in the spirit of a liberal arts education.
